The Carnac alignments

The Carnac alignments are 6,000 year-old megaliths that were put in place during the Neolithic era, between the 5th and 3rd millenia B.C.  The stones include both single standing stones (menhirs) and multistone clusters (dolmens).

According to legend, the megaliths were Roman legionaries turned to stone, while local belief held them to be magical stones. There are also general theories on the use of the stones as astronomical observatories, similar to Stonehenge. Another more plausible interpretation is that successive generations visited the site to erect stones in honor of their ancestors (grave headstones?).
